  • HOW TO RECOGNIZE ANGINA AND HEART ATTACK: MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION

    Q. What is myocardial infarction ?

    A. Myocardial infarction or heart attack is a severe heart pain resulting from necrosis and death of a segment of the heart muscle.

    Q. What is the cause ?

    A. Infarction occurs when an obstruction in a coronary artery becomes complete due to blood clotting on a patch of fatty deposit (atheroma) on the arterial wall, cutting off the blood supply to a part of the heart muscle.

    Q. How does one recognize that an attack of myocardial infarction has occurred ?

    A. The character of pain and its radiation are no different from those in angina pectoris, but it is usually more severe, much more prolonged, i.e., it may last for hours and recur for days. Also, there are other symptoms such as profound weakness, profuse cold sweat, palpitations at times, sometimes, difficulty in breathing and there may be deathly pallor. However, not all symptoms may be present in a particular patient.

    Q. Is the severity of pain a criterion of the severity of the attack ?

    A. No, the severity of pain is no criterion of the severity of the illness. Some patients may have little pain or even no pain at all, but only sudden profound weakness with cold sweat and pallor. Any middle aged or older person having these indefinite symptoms will have to be carefully observed and investigated by a physician for possible myocardial infarction.
